FSSAI
FSSAI, an autonomous body that monitors and governs the food business in India
established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India under
the provisions of the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006. Every Food Business
Operator (FBO) involved in the manufacturing, processing, storage distribution and sale
of food products must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration or License. Its registration
means the food is safe for consumption and meant the food is chemically verified.
FSSAI is a 14-digit registration or a license number that is printed on all the food
packages. The 14 digit registration number gives details about the assembling state,
producer’s permit. This registration procedure is aimed to create more accountability on
the FBO to maintain the quality of the food products. The licensing and registration
procedure and requirements are regulated by Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011.

FSSAI REGISTRATION/LICENSE TYPES
FSSAI registration or license is based on the business volume, premises and on criteria
of business turnover. The FSSAI Registration is divided into 3 categories relying on the
installed capacity or turnover or location.
FSSAI REGISTRATION
- The business having annual turnover of not more than Rs.12 lakh.
- Petty Food Business Operators.
- Temporary stallholder.
- Small-scale industries dealing in the food business.
- The tenure of the registration being a maximum of 5 years and a minimum of 1 year
and it can be renewed by making an application. - The fees for FSSAI Registration is Rs.100/- per annum.
FSSAI State License
- FSSAI State license is mandatory for business having turnover between Rs. 12 Lac
to Rs. 20 Cr. annually or/additionally. - The tenure of the license being a maximum of 5 years and a minimum of 1 year and
it can be renewed by making an application. - The fees for FSSAI state license are Rs. 2000 to Rs. 5000 per annum (State-wise variation exists).
FSSAI CENTRAL LICENSE
- FSSAI Central License is mandatory for business having turnover above Rs. 20 Cr.
- The tenure of the license being a maximum of 5 years and a minimum of 1 year and it can be renewed by making an application.
- The fees for FSSAI Central License are Rs. 7500 per annum.
